Essential Landscaping Care for New Homeowners
Maintain a Thriving Landscape in Your New Home
Proper care for your landscaping is vital to keeping your sod, trees, and shrubs healthy, especially in the early stages. This guide outlines hand-watering practices, irrigation system tips, and seasonal considerations to ensure your landscape flourishes.
Watering Guidance
Manual Watering
If your home’s landscaping was completed between September - April, it’s important to manually water sod, trees, and shrubs using a hose and sprinkler until irrigation systems are operational. Regular watering prevents issues such as bare patches in sod or dead plants, which are not covered under the Limited Home Warranty.
Hand-Watering Tips
- For the first two weeks after planting, hand-water daily, even if a sprinkler system is in place.
- In summer months (June–September), increase attention to watering, as high temperatures can dry out plants quickly.
- Monitor the root ball moisture with a moisture meter. Keep it hydrated even if the surrounding soil seems wet.
Seasonal Note
Irrigation systems typically start in mid-April. Until then, stay vigilant with manual watering, especially when temperatures exceed 60°F.

Installation and Adjustments
Once irrigation water becomes available, landscapers will finalize system installations and set irrigation clocks if needed. Access to the backyard and garage will be required for this process.
